To determine how much MULCH and/or Compost you need. Follow the steps below to get the total yards needed.
For Mulch Products:
1 – To find the area of a garden or flower bed, we multiply bed width by bed length.
2 – Then, add how deep you would like your mulch to be. The total will give you the total yards needed for your beds. Use our calculator on this page to help estimate how much you need.

For Compost Products:
1- Determine the appropriate compost application depth for your project. (See our recommended applications below)
The general rule of thumb is 1/4 to 1/2 inch if applying to the top of the soil and 1 to 2 inches amended to 6 to 8 inches when amending into the soil. Recommended maximums are 25% to 30% compost in a soil blend, but no more than 25% compost in containers or raised beds.

Incorporate 1-2 inches of McGill SoilBuilder Premium Compost to a depth of 6-8 inches into existing soil before seeding or sodding.
For topdressing and over-seeding, apply a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer of McGill SoilBuilder or SportsTurf Premium Compost before or after aerating the application site. For patching bare spots or when spreading under established trees and shrubs, apply a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer and rake in.
Apply 1 to 2 inches of McGill SoilBuilder and incorporate into the existing soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

Method 2: Fill the bed with 30% to 50% McGill LandscapeMix with native soil to create planting bed.
Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and two to three times as wide. Mix up to 25% SoilBuilder with 75% soil saved from the planting hole. Place the plant in the hole and apply amended soil around the root ball. Firm the soil as the hole is backfilled and water thoroughly.
